Clara Joyce (bow), Gloucester.tiff
Down East boatbuilders built "wood to wood." That is, they carefully fitted each plank to its neighbor using only a piece of cotton yarn as caulking. In this detail of the CLARA JOYCE undergoing repairs, note the yarn emerging from the seam. The string hanging at left was originally stretched from the stem to the stern along the hull to mark the waterline.
