Down East Landscape 04.jpg
Rippling marsh grasses sway to the breezes along N.C. Highway 70 in coastal Carteret County. Though fishing villages have been present in Down East North Carolina for more than 200 years, the extensive wetlands isolated the fishing villages from each other until the 20th century. Now roads and bridges connect these villages with Beaufort and the North Carolina mainland.
