Ancient Ostia (10 images)
Ostia Antica was once a lively and important port for the Roman Empire because of its site at the mouth of the Tiber River. Dropped sediments over the centuries made the city gradually less useful as a port and it was abandoned in the 9th century A.D. It is a wonderful ruined city to explore today, with buildings, roads, statues, inscriptions and mosaic floors visible.
