Most boatbuilders proved to be as skilled in making skiffs as they were in constructing larger boats. Skiffs had become critical to long-hauling operations, where fishermen needed them to haul in the nets. In other fisheries such as mullet fishing and pound netting, skiffs were required as well. Once the fishing season ends, fishermen paint and repair their skiffs and make new push poles and oars that they use to shove their skiffs in Core Sound.
